Diverse speakers discuss the importance of continuous improvement no matter the market’s condition

Houston, Texas, USA (11 May 2017) – The Offshore Technology Conference’s (OTC) event, d5: The Next Big Thing, took place Friday at Rice University’s Jones School of Business following OTC 2017.

Launched in 2015 to bring together game-changing, forward-thinking innovators to speak and lead group discussions, d5 again sparked the creativity necessary to identify “The Next Big Thing” for the energy sector. It provided a forum for attendees to learn from those who have created new technologies and/or been a part of transforming industries and corporate organizations.

“While market conditions continue to improve, it’s apparent that the energy industry must keep seeking out the types of innovations and efficiencies born during the most recent downturn,” said John I. Howell, III, d5 Advisory Board Chairman. “d5 is the perfect breeding ground for this thinking, as it allows bright minds with varied perspectives to share ideas that can be applied in the field and office.”

The day-long event attracted more than 140 global energy professionals and focused on “Impactful Innovation Throughout the Economic Cycle.” It featured a collection of five speakers, each of whom discussed how to implement innovative ideas, and followed with breakout discussions. In addition, there was a wrap-up panel of oil and gas executives who attended the event and discussed ways to “connect the dots” by applying what they learned to their companies and industry as a whole.

Speaker/Panel Recaps

  • Vivek Wadhwa, a Fellow at Stanford University’s Arthur & Toni Rembe Rock Center for Corporate Governance, Director of Research at the Center for Entrepreneurship and Research Commercialization at the Pratt School of Engineering, Duke University, and Faculty and Advisor at Singularity University, provided the keynote address and shared ideas about career trajectories. He indicated professionals from all industries need to re-invent themselves to stay relevant, and that creators would be needed in every line of work.
  • Riaz Siddiqi, founder and managing partner of energy and resources-focused global private equity firm Denham Capital, discussed how a less efficient global economy could actually benefit the world if the market uses more labor and capital while seeking the same product output.
  • Nina Simosko, president and CEO of NTT Innovation Institute Inc., told attendees that staff diversity drives successful companies.
  • Jose Olalla, head of business development for BBVA Compass, stressed that a company’s top management must be committed to change and innovation in order to build a positive culture.
  • Tony Cucolo, a retired U.S. Army General and associate vice chancellor for Leadership Development and Veterans Affairs for the University of Texas System, delighted the crowd with stories from his time in the military.
  • “Connect the Dots” Panel: Moderator Ram Shenoy, from the RBR Group, was joined by: Susan Cunningham, former EVP EHSR and New Frontiers at Noble Energy; Dr. Mario Ruscev, EVP, President Global Product Lines & Chief Technology Officer at Weatherford; Kristian Johansen, Chief Executive Officer at TGS-NOPEC Geophysical Company ASA; and Neal Anderson, President of Wood Mackenzie, for a recap discussion of the day’s presentations.
