Peter Marshall, DORIS Engineering Named as OTC .06 Award Recipients; Matthew Simmons Receives OTC Citation

RICHARDSON, Texas, USA (March 8, 2006) – Peter Marshall and DORIS Engineering will be honored with Distinguished Achievement Awards at the 2006 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Awards Luncheon, scheduled from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m., Tuesday, May 2 at Reliant Center in Houston, Texas, USA. Matthew Simmons also will receive a special citation for his many years of service to OTC.

The OTC annual awards event recognizes both an individual and a company or project for outstanding contributions to the offshore industry. The 2006 OTC Distinguished Achievement Award for Individuals is being awarded to Peter Marshall for his significant contributions to the evolution of the offshore industry from shallow water, fixed platforms into ultra-deepwater floating facilities, particularly for advancements in the selection, welding and inspection of steels for offshore structures, and the development of reliability-based designs.

Marshall worked at Shell for 31 years, where he achieved the company’s highest technical level, serving as consultant civil engineer. His design work and criteria development helped to improve dramatically the reliability of fixed offshore platforms and enabled the expansion of offshore development into challenging environments. After retiring, he became professor, chair of Marine Design and Construction for the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. He is currently a specialist consultant to offshore design firms and oil companies. He holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Master of Science degrees from the University of Florida, and a PhD in Environmental Science (Department of Architecture) from Kumamoto University, Japan.

OTC's 2006 Distinguished Achievement Award for Companies, Organizations, and Institutions recognizes DORIS Engineering of Paris, France, for its sustained and pioneering innovations in the design and construction of offshore facilities for nearly four decades. A medium-sized, niche company, DORIS has addressed special and difficult problems in frontier areas, including harsh environments, remote locations and very deep waters. DORIS has participated in important advancements in technologies for concrete platforms, subsea facilities, floating production/storage systems and living quarters that have reduced risk and costs. DORIS’ work has helped open the way for other companies to develop their own products.

OTC will award a special citation to Matt Simmons for his contributions to educating the world about the energy industry and his participation in numerous insightful presentations for OTC. Simmons is chairman and chief executive officer of Simmons and Company International, a specialized energy investment banking firm he founded in 1974. Simmons graduated cum laude from the University of Utah and received a master’s degree with distinction in Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He also served on the faculty as a research associate for two years. He has published numerous energy papers for industry journals and speaks frequently at government and energy conferences.

The keynote address at the awards luncheon will be “New Challenges for the Petroleum Industry,” presented by Guilherme de Oliveira Estrella, managing director for exploration and production at Petrobras. The OTC Awards Luncheon is a ticketed event at US $40 per ticket. For more information about OTC, including registration, visit www.otcnet.org/2006.
