RICHARDSON, Texas, U.S.A. (5 August 2004) – The Offshore Technology
Conference (OTC), a Houston tradition since 1969, has awarded a
$500 scholarship to Holly Prevost, an Alvin High School journalism
student. Prevost, 16, attended OTC's first annual High School Journalism
Career Day on 6 May 2004, during the conference at Reliant Center,
and wrote the article "AISD Students Learn About Offshore
Technology Issues," published in the Alvin Advertiser on 2
June 2004.
To compete for the scholarship, students had to write a story
about what they experienced at OTC. Next, the students' stories
had to be selected to be printed in their student or local newspaper
or aired on their student radio/TV station. These selected stories
were then submitted to be judged by Jennifer Castenson, marketing
manager at OTC; Debra Ford, director of communications at the Greater
Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau; and Capella Tucker, assistant
news director at KUHF-AM.
"I was extremely excited to have the opportunity to attend
OTC as an aspiring journalist," Prevost said. "I had
the chance to interview people from around the world who are experts
in offshore technology. I am thrilled to be the recipient of the
scholarship."
During the High School Journalism Career Day, local media representatives—Capella
Tucker of KUHF-AM and Dai Huynh and Catherine McIntosh of the Houston
Chronicle—talked to the participating students about their careers
as journalists and shared tips on how to write a probing news story.
The student journalists also toured the more than 340,000 net
square feet of the OTC exhibit space, which showcased the state-of-the-art
technology in the industry.
"We were glad to host the young journalists on High School
Journalism Career Day," said Sally Goldesberry, OTC Director,
Meetings and Exhibitions. "They asked thoughtful and intelligent
questions and really seemed to enjoy being on the exhibition floor.
I was so pleased by Holly's article. She really captured what the
conference is all about."
After their visit to the conference, the students put their journalism
skills to the test by writing actual news stories and submitting
them to local publications.
In the fall, Prevost will be a junior at Alvin High School. She
plans to attend the University of Houston and major in journalism.
In her free time, she enjoys being a part of Alvin High School's
drill team, the Jacketeers.
