Panel: Offshore Energy Development—Improving Federal and State Cooperation

The “Offshore Energy—Improving Federal & State Cooperation” panel discussion will discuss the appropriate role of the various coastal states and the federal government in making decisions for offshore development. Consumer Energy Alliance will bring together governors from several coastal states who have been leaders in the OCS Governors Coalition to discuss the future of offshore energy production, assess the dialogue between the states and the federal government, and offer recommendations for future federal-state cooperation.

In the past, each state’s role and stake in offshore development has been largely superseded by the federal government. In light of budget deficits and sustained high unemployment, state officials are increasingly understanding the benefits provided by energy production and would like, at the very least, to be able to evaluate what natural resources may be available in the waters off their shores. States are also advocating for increased communication with the federal government to enhance debate on this topic.

Panelists will discuss how both the benefits and risks of development should be assessed and weigh in on the states’ role in developing an offshore energy policy.
