GENERAL SESSION PANEL: NAVIGATING LONG-TERM BUSINESS IN THE FACE OF SHORT-TERM UNCERTAINTY
Moderators: Ahmed Hashmi, Vice President, R&D Strategy and Portfolio Management
Gamal Hassan, OTC Program Committee, Corporate Business Development Manager, Baker Hughes
The past three decades have witnessed global structural changes in the oil and gas supply and demand patterns which have altered the world’s energy market in important ways.We are in another period of energy dislocation today – and it is probably the most significant moment of change we've seen for many years. It is very important that the right decisions are made – balancing the short term imperatives with long term trends – and changes to strategy are considered carefully within this balanced context.
Today, NOCs, IOCs, service companies, and financial institutions are increasingly interdependent. With increasing short-term uncertainty about demand growth for energy, the incentive to invest and the ability to deliver supply when required in the future may be affected. Just like other industries, oil producers are hesitant to commit production capacity increases that may be underutilized in the future.
The panel discussion will focus on the viability of the oil and gas business model in the face of rapid changes in the business environment, direction of industry restructuring in response to short-term uncertainties, and the impact of the liquidity shortage on companies’ operations. In addition, the panel will highlight the importance of understanding complex supply and demand prospects, sustainability, the challenges and opportunities ahead, and the inherent uncertainties contained in the long-term outlook. It is our hope that it contributes to a healthy debate and dialogue among all participants, bringing diverse views into perspective.
