Distinguished Achievement Awards
Each year, OTC recognizes individuals and companies that have made outstanding achievements to the offshore industry. The accomplishments recognized through the OTC awards program represent breakthroughs, innovation, and technology enhancement by individuals, and by companies or organizations. In some years, OTC also makes a special citation to recognize other notable activities or developments that benefit the offshore industry.
The awards are given out during the OTC Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, 6 May.
2008 Distinguished Achievement Award for Individuals
James Ray, who retired from Shell in 2005 and is currently president of Oceanic Environmental Solutions, in Spring, Texas, is being honored with the OTC Distinguished Achievement Award for Individuals for his leadership in demonstrating how the petroleum industry can operate in harmony with the environment; and for his rigorous pursuit of science related to the effects of oil and gas industry operations on marine ecology.
2008 Distinguished Achievement Award for Companies, Organizations, and Institutions
The 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award for Companies, Organizations, and Institutions recognizes StatoilHydro for the Ormen Lange project, an innovative subsea-to-shore development which overcame significant technical challenges to become Norway’s deepest offshore development.
Heritage Awards
At the 2008 Awards Luncheon, OTC will also present two Heritage Awards that recognize individuals who have provided distinguished service and significant contributions to the development of offshore resources. The 2008 Heritage Award recipients are Pierre-Armand Thomas,Senior Vice President, New Technologies, Offshore, Technip; and Gordon Sterling, who had a 35-year career with Shell Oil Company and served as 1998-1999 chairman of the OTC Board of Directors.

2008 Awards timeline
- 1 September 2007 - Deadline to submit preliminary nomination form and supporting information (totaling no more than 10 PowerPoint slides) on nominee
- Early October - Awards Committee meets to review initial nominations
- October and November - Committee may request additional information on nominees
- 15 November - Final nomination packages due, if more information requested
- 8 December - Awards Committee meets to review and select award winners
- Mid-December - Winners are notified
- 1 March 2008 - OTC Press Release announcing award winners
- 6 May 2008 - OTC Awards Luncheon
Seeking nominations for 2009 awards
Nominations for the 2008 awards have closed. OTC will accept nominations for Distinguished Achievement Awards for 2009. Candidates (individuals or organizations) must have made significant and unique achievements in or contributions to any field of offshore technology. This includes, but is not limited to, the design, development and construction of tools, equipment, technical services, vessels, instrumentation, and/or outstanding humanitarian and leadership service or contributions to environmental efforts.
How to make a nomination
A nomination package consists of:
- a completed nomination form (see below)
- a presentation of no more than 10 PowerPoint slides
To make a nomination for OTC 2009, submit a nomination package. Be sure to indicate how the committee can contact you for more information.
