Panelist: Jesús Reyes-Heroles
Jesús F. Reyes-Heroles’ professional career is a combination of private practice with public service. He started his career in 1975, as research assistant at Mexico’s Central Bank. He was Executive President of GEA/StructurA from 2001 to November 2006. He was also Ambassador of Mexico to the US from October 1997 to 30 November 2000.
Reyes-Heroles was Secretary of Energy during President Zedillo's term. In that capacity, he was President of the Board of several companies, such as Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) and Compañía de Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC).
In December 1994, he was appointed Director General (CEO) of Banco Nacional de Obras y Servicios Públicos (Banobras), the national infrastructure development bank. From 1991 to 1994 he was President of the Board and Director General of Grupo de Economistas y Asociados (GEA), a consulting firm which he co-founded. During 1993 and 1994, Reyes-Heroles was the Mexican member of the "Eminent Persons Group" of the APEC.
From 1989 to 1990 he was Chief of Staff for the Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Previously, from 1983 to 1988, he served as General Director of Financial Planning at the Treasury Ministry, a position he held for a full six year term.
Reyes-Heroles has multiple publications in academic books and journals. He has been member of the board of Banamex Citigroup and Wal Mart México, as well as of the board of trustees of Universidad Iberoamericana and the Fundación Gonzalo Río Arronte.
Reyes Heroles holds a BA in Economics from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de Mexico (1976), and also carried out law studies at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). In 1980, he obtained a PhD in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a Fullbright fellow.
