Contributions by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP)
Keir Becker, Professor, Marine Geology and Geophysics, University of Miami
The internationally funded Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) began in 2004, and builds on 30 years of scientific achievements from previous successful ocean drilling investigations. Dr. Keir Becker, chairman of the IODP Science Planning Committee, will outline the ambitious program of deepwater ocean drilling and exploration planned through 2013, and highlight recent technical and scientific contributions that relate to the E&P industry. IODP has continually expanded the frontiers of sampling and measurement technologies, and is increasing its drilling capacity with a riserless drillship supported by the U.S., a new riser drillship provided by Japan, and mission-specific platforms for areas that are inaccessible to the drillships. His overview will set the stage for more detailed presentations during the afternoon technical session entitled, "Technical Highlights of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program."
Speaker Profile
Keir Becker is professor of marine geology and geophysics at the University of Miami and currently chair of the Science Planning Committee for the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). Since 1989, he has been one of the leaders in utilizing scientific ocean drilling holes for long-term “ CORK” hydrogeological observatories in a variety of deepwater geological settings. He earned his PhD in 1981 from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography for seafloor geothermal studies and since then has been active in special downhole experiments to study near-surface fluid flow processes.
