Professor of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering,
Dean of Undergraduate Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
J. Kim Vandiver has served as professor of mechanical and
ocean engineering for the Department of Mechanical Engineering
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since January
2005.
Vandiver serves as dean for undergraduate research and director
of the MIT Edgerton Center. He founded the Edgerton Center
in 1992 to provide resources for MIT students engaged in
hands-on educational projects. He also serves as director
of the MIT Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program,
which involves 80% of MIT's undergraduate students in research
projects with MIT research staff and faculty.
Recognized for excellence in teaching, Vandiver has stressed
the importance of hands-on learning. He has worked to enliven
the mainstream curriculum, incorporating more and earlier
opportunities for students to solve real-life problems, engage
in research and develop relationships with faculty.
A member of the Ocean Engineering Department faculty since
1975, Vandiver chaired MIT's faculty from 1991 until 1993.
His research focuses on the dynamics of offshore structures
and flow-induced vibration. He teaches dynamics and mechanical
vibration at the graduate and undergraduate level.
Vandiver was the first recipient of the Arthur Lubinski
Best Mechanical Engineering Paper Award at the 1984 Offshore
Technology Conference (OTC). He also served as the 1987 OTC
Program Committee chairman.
He holds a B.S. degree in engineering from Harvey Mudd College
of Science and Engineering and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in
ocean engineering from the MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution Joint Program. He also is an active consultant
in structural dynamics with the offshore engineering industry.

Vice President, Marine Engineering,

Don Vardeman is vice president of marine engineering for Kerr-McGee
Oil & Gas in Houston.
Vardeman began his oil-and-gas industry career in 1975 with
Amoco in operations,
drilling and facilities. In 1977, he began working for Owens-Illinois
as a plant electrical engineer and joined Sun Oil Company
in 1979. There, he served as manager of facility engineering,
manager of operations technology and manager of the Neptune
project. When Kerr-McGee merged with Oryx in 1999, he became
manager of marine facilities engineering. Vardeman has overseen
several of the company's deepwater developments, including
Nansen, Boomvang, Redhawk, Gunnison and the company's newest
deepwater development under way at Constitution.
Vardeman serves on the Board of Directors of the Offshore
Technology Conference. He holds a BS degree in electrical
engineering from Texas A&M University.

Since 2004, P.C. (Paul) Warwick has served as president,
Middle East and North Africa, for exploration and production
of ConocoPhillips. In 2001, Warwick was appointed president
and chief executive officer of Gulf Indonesia Resources Limited
and then assumed the role of president, ConocoPhillips Indonesia,
following the ConocoPhillips merger in 2002. With a background
in projects and operations, he held a number of positions

Mayor Bill White serves as the executive officer of the City of Houston.
As the City's chief administrator and official representative, the Mayor
is responsible for the general management of the City and for seeing that
all laws and ordinances are enforced. Previously White was president and
chief executive officer of the WEDGE Group, where he led the business to
record performance. He also served as Deputy U.S. Secretary of Energy. White
was a partner with the law firm Susman Godfrey, where he handled complex
